How to Paint Furniture: A Beginner'south Guide

About the Tutorial

Although I have learned a lot about painting and refinishing furniture, I wasn't ever all that knowledgeable. I have painted several pieces for my dwelling house, and most of them I did totally Incorrect! I know it sounds like it should be then simple – you just grab a paint brush and paint, right? Nope!

If you want a professional-looking finish that is going to last (that'southward the cardinal – you don't want information technology to beginning chipping and peeling away), then at that place are a few guidelines that you need to follow.

Although there are many furniture refinishing techniques, today I am going to cover simply the accented basics of painting. I realize that some of my readers are article of furniture painting veterans, simply many of you are not. This guide applies to existent wood furniture – I will talk about painting laminate some other time.

Ok, and then let'southward go down to business.

Project Supplies:

  • Murphy'south Oil Soap
  • Medium Grit Sandpaper
  • Fine Grit Sandpaper
  • Primer
  • Tack Cloth
  • Pigment
  • Paintbrush
  • Foam Roller
  • Paint Sprayer (Optional)
  • Topcoat (I like MinwaxPolycrylicand Finishing Wax. I likewise loveMinwax Satin Wipe-On Polyfor stained pieces.)

HOW TO Pigment Furniture

Step 1: Prep, prep, prep!

First, prep your article of furniture. You can't just slap on a coat of pigment and phone call it a day. It volition skin and chip and it will not last.

The outset thing I like to do before I paint a piece is to give it a good cleaning (later on removing the hardware, of course), especially if it's been sitting around in a dusty garage or storage infinite. Murphy's Oil Lather works slap-up and it's rubber for furniture.

Remove all drawers before painting and work on those separately.

Step 2: Sand

Side by side, sand your furniture and go all of the glossy finish off so that the paint volition accept a proficient surface to "grab" onto. Medium-grit sandpaper should exist fine. (I use fine-grit between paint coats.)

If you are painting as opposed to staining, there is no demand to strip the finish or sand it down to the bare forest. Simply removing the glossy finish will suffice. If the surface is already dull, yous can skip this step.

Step iii: Prime

Afterwards your furniture is dry and dust-free, paint on some primer. This helps your paint adhere to the piece better and information technology likewise covers any stains or discolorations in the wood. I prefer KILZ Primer , and they also offer it in a spray (which I oasis't tried yet, just program to!). I've heard cracking things almost it. Oil-based primer is as well great for furniture.

Pace 4: Sand Over again

And then, sand again! Using a fine-dust sandpaper, lightly sand your piece between EVERY SINGLE glaze of pigment. This helps yous attain a much more professional and even finish.

Be sure to remove the sanding dust each time—tack cloth works great.

Footstep 5: Paint

Now that you have your slice primed and fix, it'due south time to paint. For furniture, I apply interior latex paint, normally in a semi-gloss finish. I recommend annihilation that's not a flat cease. (It volition show every fingerprint and flaw and will be harder to clean.) The glossier the stop, the easier to clean.

Paint sparse coats, and I will repeat: sand between each coat! This step is very important if you lot want to attain an even end. I normally paint 2-3 coats total.

Now, in that location are a few dissimilar ways to go virtually painting. You tin can utilize a pigment sprayer , or even regular spray paint (only get a decent make!), a brush, or roller. I usually apply a small foam roller on the main parts of the furniture and a brush in the difficult to attain crevices, painting the crevices showtime. The roller helps foreclose visible brush strokes.

Step vi: Protect

After your last coat of paint has dried for at least 24 hours, yous are set to seal it. (Or you can just leave information technology alone and allow it cure for about 30 days. Merely if you program on doing this, and then seriously, exit it lone and don't touch information technology!)

Sealing your article of furniture provides extra protection for your finish and also creates a wipeable, piece of cake to make clean surface.  If you lot are using a white or extremely light colour of paint, I highly recommend that you do Not use polyurethane to seal your finish. It can yellow over time. On any other paint color, it should be fine, and I recommend Minwax Wipe-On Poly because it is extremely easy to use. (I like the Satin finish.)

I actually prefer to apply a water-based topcoat though like Minwax Polycrylic. It's easier to clean upwardly and there aren't as many fumes.

Another selection, which I love, that can be used on any color including whites, is piece of furniture wax. Minwax Finishing Wax is crawly, and I've heard skilful things about other brands as well. You lot just wipe it on (I use cheesecloth to utilise it), let it dry for 10-xv minutes, then buff it with a clean cloth until you get it as shiny as yous desire information technology. This is what I used on my dresser.

After yous've sealed your furniture, I recommend leaving information technology alone for a day or two before using information technology or touching it. It would be a shame to crusade impairment to all of that difficult piece of work past handling information technology too before long!

Add your hardware, and you lot're done! You tin can likewise distress the piece if you'd like, or just get out information technology as is. The dresser in the photograph was but slightly distressed using fine grit sandpaper. I distressed it after my terminal coat of paint and before applying my wax.

Paint has an amazing power to transform any piece. Here are a few pieces that I've painted:
